Welcome to FLL Challenge

FLL Challenge is a FIRST Robotics program for 4th-5th graders. “Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering – building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game.”

Bloomfield Hills has multiple FLL teams across the district and teams are formed based on which school a student attends. Typically teams are between 8-10 students and we try to keep friends together! Students at this level have the opportunity to compete against other teams in the area.

It is important for any robotics family (new or returning) to join our email list. We send monthly newsletters, information on how to register for the robotics season, summer camp and more. Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already and share this page with any BHSD family interested in robotics. Contact us at info@bloomfieldrobotics.com

Registration

Team registration is limited and will end June 15. After June 15, students can be put on a waitlist which will close at the end of summer. FLL Challenge season starts August 1 and typically ends in December. Teams will compete in at least one local event. FLL is MASTERPIECE℠ challenge, where teams will imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe. Students should be entering grades 4-5 fall 2023. The cost for FLL Challenge is $175.

Coaches

FLL Challenge Coaches will be communicating with each other and Bloomfield Robotics administrators through the app/website BAND. Resources, ideas, and important notices will be shared there. Email us at info@bloomfieldrobotics.com if you are a coach or assistant coach and have not received an invite.

    Season Outline & Time Commitments

The FLL Challenge season August 1-November 2023

At the 4th/5th grade age level, teams typically meet one time a week, usually at a team member/coach’s home. The coach assigned to your student’s team will be in contact to plan out meeting days. Generally, meetings are in the evening since coaches are parent volunteers.

FLLChallenge teams are introduced to a scientific and real-world challenge for teams to focus and research. The students work out a solution to a problem related to the theme and build and program a robot with the LEGO Education SPIKE Prime kit. Teams will compete in 1-2 local events around November, and possibly qualify for the state tournament which is usually local and around early-mid December.
