Welcome to FTC

FTC is a FIRST Robotics program for 6th-8th graders. “FIRST Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming.”

Bloomfield Hills has multiple FTC teams across the district and teams are formed at our two middle schools: North Hills and South Hills. It is important for any robotics family (new or returning) to join our email list. We send monthly newsletters, information on how to register for the robotics season, summer camp and more. Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already and share this page with any BHSD family interested in FTC. Contact us at info@bloomfieldrobotics.com

Registration

Team registration is limited and will end June 15. After June 15, students can be put on a waitlist which will close at the end of summer. FTC is CENTERSTAGE℠ where teams will raise the curtain on the power of design, creativity, and precision to create all new experiences. Students should be entering grades 6-8 in fall 2023. The cost for FTC is $200.

Coaches

FTC Coaches will be communicating with each other and Bloomfield Robotics administrators through the app/website Slack. Resources, ideas, and important notices will be shared there. Email us at info@bloomfieldrobotics.com if you are a coach or assistant coach and have not received an invite.

    Season Outline & Time Commitments

The FTC season runs August 1-December 2023

At the middle school level, teams typically meet twice a week at the high school team’s shop at Franklin & Square Lake. The coach assigned to your student’s team will be in contact to plan out meeting days. Generally, meetings are in the evening since coaches are parent volunteers.

Teams will design, build, and program an 18”X18”X18” robot that will perform a real-world application. They will document the engineering process, get hands-on programming experience, develop problem solving, organizational, and teamwork skills. Teams will compete at 2 local competitions, usually around November and could qualify for the Michigan State Championship in mid-December.
