The Bionic Black Hawks, Team 2834, won the Excellence in Engineering Award in both of their qualifying competitions, the first in Milford and then in Muskegon. The Black Hawks demonstrated the benefits of their new engineering and design process in robot successes on the field in both Milford and Muskegon. Team 2834 finished in the finals of both competitions and qualified for the FIRST Michigan District State Championship. The Bionic Black Hawks are currently ranked thirteenth in the state. The Black Hawks are a Hall of Fame FIRST robotics team in their 17th year in competition. FIRST stands for “For Innovation and Recognition of Science and Technology,” and is an organization that runs robotics tournaments to promote educational engagement in STEM.
Team 2834 won the Excellence in Engineering Awards because of their design process that highlights efficiency by the use of real world practices. The Bionic Black Hawk’s new design process is based on things a lot of large companies do to make their design processes as efficient as possible. Team 2834 utilized concepts such as The Toyota Way, systems integration, design reviews, program management and more to enhance their internal communications and keep the whole team focused and moving together.
